Description:
Since EA Sports has covered the racing market with games based on licenses from Formula One and NASCAR, it is only natural that French publisher Infogrames would gobble up the rights to a game based on Le Mans. Typical of licensed racing games, Test Drive Le Mans includes official tracks--six to be exact--and, in addition to championship mode, players can test their grit in an all-day and all-night marathon known as the Le Mans 24 Hours. During this marathon race, players negotiate Le Mans at night, then deal with blinding early morning glare, all the while making several pit stops to repair damage while avoiding running on empty.
Le Mans wins the award for presentation with a cool intro movie and a British announcer who details every track and car in depth. There is even an advanced telemetry feature that pinpoints where drivers accelerated and decelerated. It also communicates speed and the points in the race where you achieve maximum speed.
Even with all of its finely rendered cars, the tracks in Le Mans are a bit lacking in terms of shading and realism. But as far as racing games go, it's the only Le Mans game out there (at the time of this review, at least). --Robb Guido
