Hidden artwork

Place any of the three game discs in a PC compatible CD-ROM drive to find high resolution .BMP files in the "omake" directory.

70 Person Battle

Successfully complete the game and save the Clear Data to unlock 70 Person Battle on the options screen. Disc 3 must be in the Dreamcast in order to play this mode.

Reverse control configuration for Space Harrier

To reverse the control configuration (down and up are switched) in Space Harrier, hold A, X, or Y. "Up input is down" should appear below the number of credits. Press Start to play the game with reverse control.

Extra money

After getting your job, on the second day of work move all the boxes to Warehouse 3 as normal. When the shift ends, do not go to the back of Warehouse 17. Instead, play darts or practice your moves to waste time until Ryo says it is time to go home. When you wake up the next morning, you will have the same work day over again. If you made quota the previous day, you will get paid more money for the same job. This can be repeated as much as needed.

Better slot machine chances

Go to the Lapis fortune teller and choose "Gamble" for your fortune. She will give you a lucky number. Go to the slot house and find the slot machine with your lucky number on it. You should win approximately 70% of the time.

Infinite money (Japanese version)

Take the 500 yen you are given each day from the table and leave the house. Return to the house and enter your room. Leave your room and 500 more yen will be on the table. Repeat this as much as needed to collect an unlimited amount of money.

Make fork lifts back up

While you are driving the forklift you can easily make people in other forklifts back up even if they are /or are not in directly in front of you ( for example, while driving down a open area honk the horn and people will automatically back up ). Be somewhat close to them. Remember to honk the horn !

The Winning Can

When your in Dobuita or the Harbor, go to the pop machine (any) and choose a pop. I would recommend that you choose the blue can on the choices (very left) of the pop machine. If the pop you chose is blue then you need to choose again until you get a can that is yellow. That means that you've won; now take that can to the casier in the Tomato Mart and in your items choose the can in front of the casier. Press A and you will choose a ticket (i chose winning tickets most of the time).

Unlock the 70 Person Battle

To unlock the only good part of the game, first you'll have to beat the game. Then, on disc three, go to the main menu. Select Options, then select the 70 person battle.

See Santa!

Set the Dreamcast's internal clock to December 25 and begin playing Shenmue. You will see Santa Claus walking the streets!

Raccoon Bonus

Instead of randomly shooting down bonus characters, concentrate on Raccoons instead. Consecutive shots at the Raccoons will let you achieve a much higher score.

QTE with Mean Girls

When it is about 5 p.m. on Disc Two, head to the food stand to see a cut sceen. The girl Mi will ask her sister for money but then there will be an argument. Speak with the girl at the food stand afterwards and she will ask you to calm her sister down. Head to warehouse 7 afterwards and there will be a QTE.

Real-World Weather

Once you have completed the game and saved your data you can access the Options menu and turn on the Magic Weather. This will access the real weather that Yokosuka experienced in 1986 and 1987.

Four Discs, Four Different Audio Warnings

If you place your Shenmue Discs into any CD-Player you'll hear a different character deliver the message with each disc you place into your CD-Player. The first Disc is Ryo, the second is Fukusan, the third disc is Chai and the Fourth disc is Nozomi.

Play arcade games for free

Be sure you have at least 4,000 yen. Go to the Tomato store in Dobiuta. Then buy either potato chips, chocolate, or caramel so you can do the raffle. Keep on buying and buying until you get the 2nd prize (this takes a lot of patience.) Now that you won the Sega Saturn game, go back home. Go to the TV room (the room across your bedroom.) Open up the doors on the TV stand (you will pick up the Sega Saturn and put it on the TV.) Look at it, then go to the inventory screen (the Y button.) Select your Saturn game, and enjoy!

Description:
To say that Shenmue is an anticipated title is an understatement; the game made huge waves in Japan upon its release, and American gamers have been waiting since then to see what the fuss is all about. It's a game in which the concept itself is the selling point. What if you could portray a young hero in a fully realized Japanese city? Would you like to participate in and influence an over-the-top kung fu-style action-mystery flick in your living room? What if lots of combat, cinematic flourish, detail, and a dash of romance were thrown in?

The game itself is awash in small details, crammed into a confined space. The city of Yokusuka circa 1986 is rendered beautifully in a short series of neighborhoods that are long on detail even if short on variety. The story itself is ripped straight from a chopsocky flick: you portray the young hero Ryo Hazuki, whose father (a kung fu sensei, naturally) is killed before his very eyes by a mysterious and frightening villain. Ryo must uncover the identity of the killer and fight his way through the city in an effort to avenge this wrongful death.

Shenmue's Yokusuka might be short on space--in total, it represents maybe a square mile--but the detail is overwhelming. You can interact with nearly every person or object that you see; 300 citizens go about their daily routines, and whom you encounter is as much determined by where you are as when you are there.

Much of this interaction involves combat that ranges from Dragon's Lair-style reaction tests (such as timing a button press to dodge an oncoming car) to freeform kung fu fighting. Further, each second of real time equals about a minute of game time, and Ryo has to be home by 11 p.m. each evening. The game moves at a brisk pace, and each challenge or battle feels like a race against time. Some might say that gaming doesn't get shallower than this (you are essentially performing tasks and exploring, instead of gaming), but the game feels like no other and is ultimately satisfying by the time that it all ends. In this way, Shenmue is more than a game--it's an event that's worth experiencing. --Andrew S. Bub
